Department of Education begins beta testing student loan forgiveness application

The beta test version of the student loan forgiveness application

The U.S. Department of Education has begun testing the student loan forgiveness platform. The application is in beta test, but functional.

Potential applicants are able to apply at studentaid.gov. Even though the platform is in beta, people who visit the site during the testing phase will still be able to submit their applications for real. However, those applications will not be processed until the full rollout.

This is the next step of President Biden’s initiative to forgive student debt which was a central part of his campaign in 2020. Though the plan has met some legal challenges from Republicans it is still moving forward.

The plan forgives up to $10,000 of student loan debt for regular borrowers and $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients. Applicants have to hold federal student loans and have made less than $125,000 in 2021 or 2020. (Families less than $250,000.)
