The Biden administration’s federal student loan forgiveness program is up in the air. A federal judge recently declared the debt relief plan unconstitutional. The Biden administration has filed an appeal but for now the plan is on a legal hold barring the outcome of the appeal. The website established for the program reflects the unresolved status of the case.
The online web portal that previously served as the application for loan forgiveness is now offline. Instead, borrowers are greeted by a message that reads:
“Courts have issued orders blocking our student debt relief program. As a result, at this time, we are not accepting applications. We are seeking to overturn those orders.”
The program was already on pause due to another legal challenge but this latest decision actually shuts the program down pending the outcome of the appeal.
The appeal is expected to reach the Supreme Court which currently has a conservative super majority but has been reluctant to rule on the legality of the program in the early stages.
