ChatGPT blocked in NYC public schools

A representative for the New York City Department of Education stated on Thursday that the controversial artificial intelligence program ChatGPT has been blocked on school computers and networks.

The popular chatbot is reportedly advanced enough to generate answers to prompts and even whole essays stoking fears of widespread and undetectable cheating among students. A spokesman for New York City public schools confirmed that the platform was banned on the grounds of academic integrity in a statement.

“Due to concerns about negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content, access to ChatGPT is restricted on New York City Public Schools’ networks and devices,” Said department of education spokesperson Jenna Lyle in a statement. “While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success,”

Cheating has been a concern ever since the chatbot started gaining popularity. Unlike other chatbots on the internet  ChatGPT is powered by an AI advanced enough to mimic human-like responses meaning that an essay generated by the platform could pass as legitimate.
