An elementary school will remain closed through the week after a 6-year-old boy reportedly shot and injured a teacher on Friday.
According to witnesses, the boy had revealed the gun to the class and the teacher was attempting to confiscate the weapon when the child pointed it at the teacher and pulled the trigger. According to Newport Police Chief, the incident was “not an accidental shooting.”
The victim, Abby Zwerner, had life-threatening injuries but is in improving health now.
The boy remains in custody but according to officials is unlikely to be charged due to his young age. However, a parent or guardian could possibly face charges but those charges related to the shooting but those are only misdemeanors.
According to NBC’s school shooting tracker, this was the first school shooting of 2023.
