The Supreme Court began to hear oral arguments around Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan.
The Biden Administration’s argument rests on the 9/11 era HEROES Act which gives the Secretary of Education the ability to “waive or modify” federal student loans in connection with national emergencies.
Conservative justices seemed skeptical of the Biden administration’s interpretation of the act in regard to the plan that is on the table:
“We’re talking about half-a-trillion dollars and 43 million Americans. How does that fit under the normal understanding of modify?” asked Chief Justice John Robert during the arguments.
The court also considered whether the states and borrowers had the legal standing to sue in the first place.
A decision on the matter could come as soon as late June. ed
