Parent accidentally sends elementary student to school with a gun

Lawrence Township’s Metropolitan School District officials had to issue a letter to families regarding a potential safety threat at Mary Castle Elementary School on Tuesday. A parent accidentally left a gun in their child’s backpack and neglected to remove it before the child went to school the next day. Reportedly the parent had placed the firearm in the bag on Monday when they were unable to carry it into an unidentified facility.

The school became aware of the situation when another parent reported that their child had seen a student with a gun in their backpack on the school bus. No shots were fired or and there were no reported injuries but according to officials, the parent could still face charges.

This is the latest in a string of incidents involving elementary students and firearms. Earlier this year, a 6-year-old boy reportedly shot his teacher after obtaining a gun from home.
