DeSantis signs school choice expansion bill

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill that expands taxpayer-funded vouchers for private school tuition.

Florida already has school vouchers but previously they were mostly only available to students with disabilities or students from low-income families. This bill would expand access to students who don’t fall into either one of those categories.

Many Republican-controlled states are currently creating school choice programs or aggressively expanding the ones they already have.

Supporters of voucher programs say parents want to choose their child’s school and the increased competition for students improves traditional public school systems. Opponents are concerned that publicly-funded programs take resources away from public schools.
