Virginia Teacher Shot by Six-Year-Old Files $40M Lawsuit, Alleging School Ignored Warnings

A Virginia teacher who was shot by a six-year-old boy has filed a $40m lawsuit, claiming the school ignored warnings.

Lawyers for Caitlin Zwerner said that school leadership knew of at least three warnings that the boy had a gun and that other students had seen it. The suit claims that teachers’ concerns about the boy’s behavior were regularly brought to the attention of the Richneck Elementary School administration, but they were dismissed.

The suit seeks a jury trial and alleges physical pain and mental anguish. The Newport News School Board, former superintendent George Parker III, and Richneck principal Briana Foster Newton are named as defendants in the suit.
