Deja Taylor, the mother of a 6-year-old boy who shot his teacher with a 9 mm handgun in January, has been indicted by a grand jury in Virginia.
Taylor faces charges of felony child neglect and recklessly leaving a loaded firearm so as to endanger a child, according to Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn. Virginia has laws on the books about unsecured firearms and children. Howard previously said that the boy himself is unlikely to face any charges.
The teacher, Abigail Zwerner, recently filed a $40 million lawsuit against the administrators of Richneck Elementary based on the premise that they were negligent in investigating reports that the boy in question had a weapon on his person. Additionally, the student allegedly had a history of violence which necessitated a family member or additional monitor to be present with him in class but no so such adult was in the classroom when the incident occurred.
