The Florida Board of Education has approved an expansion of the “Don’t Say Gay” policy, which is part of the Parental Rights in Education law.

The version of the Parental Rights in Education bill that passed last year banned all discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity up to the third grade in Florida. The newly approved rule will expand that same rule to the remaining grades. It will take effect in a month after a comment period.

Democrats have called the law anti-lgbt and unnecessary. Many have questioned whether the law is even constitutional but the legal challenges have not stopped the law from going into effect at the grade school level.

This is the latest development in Gov. Ron DeSantis’s conservative education agenda. Lawmakers in Florida are also looking to officially expand the law through the state legislature.
