Gov. Ron DeSantis signs bill to defund college diversity and equity programs

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill that prohibits colleges from using funds on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs at public colleges in the state.

Specifically, the bill bans schools from putting public funding toward any programs that  ”advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, or promote or engage in political or social activism, as defined by rules of the State Board of Education and regulations of the Board of Governors.”

Another significant aspect of the legislation addresses the teaching of certain classes.

“General education core courses may not distort significant historical events or include a curriculum that teaches identity politics, violates s. 1000.05, or is based on theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political, and economic inequities.”

At the signing of the bill, Gov. DeSantis suggested that students interested in studying such topics attend colleges in other states.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Education have engaged in an aggressive campaign to push back against what they perceive as “woke” policies and curriculum in both K-12 schools and universities.
