Florida teacher under investigation for showing Disney movie with gay character

A fifth-grade teacher in Florida is currently being investigated by her school and the state’s Education Department for showing her students the Disney animated movie.

Jenna Barbee, a teacher at Winding Waters K-8 in Brooksville, showed the film “Strange World,” which features an openly gay character. Barbee, who posted a viral TikTok video about the incident, claims that a parent, who also serves on the local school board, reported her for screening the movie.

The film, rated PG, briefly mentions the gay character’s crush on another male character but does not focus on his sexuality. Barbee maintains that she showed the movie to complement her science lessons and provide her students a break after standardized testing. She had obtained permission from parents to show PG-rated films at the start of the school year.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has publicly feuded with Disney in recent months over the state’s stance on LGBTQ+ issues.
