The House of Representatives has passed a measure, largely along party lines, to block President Joe Biden’s student debt relief program and end the pause on federal student loan payments.
The proposed student loan forgiveness plan forgives up to $10,000 in federal student loans for most eligible borrowers and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients. The plan was intended to fulfill a campaign promise made by Joe Biden but has been challenged in court by conservatives who claim it is unfair to the taxpayers and that it is an overreach of the executive branch.
The legislation received a 218-203 vote but is unlikely to be approved in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
