Congress blocks Biden’s student loan relief program

The Senate has passed a resolution led by Republicans to block President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan.

The resolution just passed the House last week with a 218-203 vote. The Senate vote was 52-46.

The plan, which would forgive up to $10,000 in federal student loans for most eligible borrowers and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients has been opposed by Republicans since its introduction. However, the resolution was able to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate with help from two moderate Democrats and one independent who voted with Republicans.

President Biden is expected to veto the legislation but that too may be overruled by a forthcoming decision from the conservative-controlled Supreme Court.
