President Joe Biden has vetoed Republican-led legislation aimed at repealing his plan to cancel student debt for borrowers.
Republicans, along with a couple of Democrat defectors passed a bill to block Biden’s student loan plan last week. The plan promised up to $10,000 in debt relief for general borrowers and $20,000 for pell grant recipients but has been criticized by conservatives for being too costly and unfair.
Biden’s veto is likely to stand as the bill passed only by a slim margin meaning a veto override is highly unlikely. This marks the fifth veto of Biden’s presidency.
Biden’s student loan relief plan still faces legal challenges. Most notably a looming Supreme Court decision where the conservative majority appears openly skeptical of Biden’s authority to pass such a measure without Congress.
