A 28-year-old woman and her mother have been arrested in Louisiana after the woman allegedly posed as a 17-year-old student at a high school to learn English.

Martha Jessenia Gutierrez Serrano and her Marta Elizabeth Serrano Alvarado were charged with injuring public records. Serrano Alvarado used fake documents from Honduras to register her daughter at Hahnville High School.

The sheriff stated that Gutierrez Serrano enrolled in school with the intention of learning English and that there was no evidence of other criminal activity.

The investigation began after a tip was received suggesting that the student might be older than she claimed. The school system plans to review enrollment processes and policies in light of the incident.
