NCAA Tournament expansion not imminent

The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee recently discussed the potential expansion of the NCAA tournament, but the organization clarified that any expansion is not imminent.

A report from the NCAA Division I transformation committee proposed allowing 25% of teams in sports sponsored by at least 200 schools to participate in annual championship events, potentially increasing the number of teams in the men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments from 68 to as many as 90. However, the decision to expand the tournament is still under consideration, with the committee examining different models and seeking feedback.

The NCAA tournament has undergone expansion in the past, with the field expanding to 64 teams in 1985, then to 65 teams in 2001, and finally to 68 teams in 2011.
