The House has passed a bill to discourage schools from housing migrants.
The Schools Not Shelters Act, introduced by Republican Rep. Marcus Molinaro, would deny federal education funding to K-12 schools and universities that house migrants on their campuses.
The bill is unlikely to become law. Republicans only control one house of Congress and the bill lacks companion legislation in the Senate.
The bill is largely perceived as a critique of the Biden administration’s immigration policies. It is not really known how many schools actually house migrants as the bill alleges. However, some places like New York City have recently considered using empty schools to temporarily house migrants.
