Yale University has made a significant adjustment to its admissions policy, transitioning from a test-optional approach to one that is test-flexible.

Following four years of allowing applicants to choose whether to submit test scores, Yale now mandates the inclusion of scores with all applications. However, in a departure from previous practices, applicants can opt to report Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exam scores instead of the ACT or SAT. This policy shift follows a period of reflection and data analysis and aims to promote diversity within the student body.

The decision to reintroduce a test requirement stemmed from Yale’s experience with both test-optional and test-required policies. The university observed that standardized tests, when incorporated thoughtfully as part of a comprehensive review process, can contribute to increased diversity. Moreover, relying solely on the ACT and SAT may deter promising students from considering Yale. However, extending invitations for application without any test scores may inadvertently disadvantage students from low-income, first-generation, and rural backgrounds. This adjustment has sparked discussions about the role of standardized tests in the college admissions process.

Many high-profile schools adopted test-optional policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now many of them are returning to requiring them again.
